On the 9th of December 1948 there was a fire at Chatterley Whitfield. Three men were trapped underground and unable to get to safety. As the rescue men raced to free them, they were met with a mass of flames. Three men died and one was injured. One miner's body was recovered on the 11th of December, but it would be many months before the bodies of the other two were recovered.
I am researching this accident at the moment and it will be included on our web page as soon as possible.
I am also with the Friends of Chatterley Whitfield, who are actively involved with the regeneration of the site.
